Meet our featured StageBio Senior Pathologist, Dr. Lisa Mangus, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DABT!
In May 2026, Dr. Lisa Mangus will celebrate her 5-year anniversary with StageBio! Please join us in congratulating her and get to know one of the brilliant minds behind our neuropathology team.
How long have you worked with StageBio?
I’m coming up on my 5-year anniversary this May!
What are your primary interests within the Pathology space?
As a member of the neuropathology team at StageBio, I spend most of my working hours looking at and thinking about brains, spinal cords, nerves, and ganglia. I do have a particular interest in the peripheral nervous system, probably because I studied it during my PhD training. Prior to joining StageBio, I also did a lot of diagnostic pathology work with zoo and aquatic species. I’ll always have a fondness for non-mammals like fish, reptiles, and amphibians.
What do you like about working at StageBio?
I really enjoy the variety of different study types that I get to work on. Even though I focus on the nervous system, each investigation is unique and typically includes an array of very informative (and often beautiful) special stains and labeling techniques. There’s always something new to learn. I also appreciate feeling well-supported by the many fantastic people that make these studies possible – from the laboratory staff and research associates to the project managers and QA team – it truly does take a village!
Is there a recent project that stood out as an example of that successful teamwork?
Yes! I recently worked on a study where we developed a machine learning algorithm to analyze detailed features in resin-embedded nerve samples. Accomplishing this required a combination of StageBio’s technical capabilities, including 80X slide scanning and cutting-edge image analysis software, plus highly skilled laboratory and morphometry teams. I was able to review the results at multiple points throughout the process to make sure the algorithm was performing as expected. The finished product is quite impressive!
What do you like to do on the weekends?
On Saturday mornings, my husband, son, and I all go to German language school together (I’m currently in the intermediate class). Then we usually treat ourselves to lunch from a local bakery or market. I’m also a big music fan and enjoy going to live performances whenever I get the chance.
Thanks, Dr. Mangus, for all you do for the neuropathology space and StageBio team!
