Can you introduce yourself and share your role at StageBio?
My name is Sharon Pereira, I work as Scientific Project Manager at StageBio.
What inspired you to join StageBio, and how long have you been with the team? Where were you before?
I was inspired to join StageBio because it would provide me an opportunity to make a real impact on research that leads to better health outcomes and contribute to the success of important studies. I have been in the company for one month. I worked in a multinational company named the Cultivated B located in Heidelberg, Germany that is dedicated to the development and application of breakthrough technologies in cellular agriculture, precision fermentation and bioreactor engineering.
What initially sparked your interest in your field, and how did you choose your specific field of study?
A personal experience: witnessing family and friends affected by cancer was a driving force in my pursuit of developing healthier, safer alternatives to conventional meat production, and also cancer research.
Can you share a breakthrough or discovery in your research/work that you found particularly exciting?
Discovery of novel genes by RNA sequencing. Using CRISPR gene editing for both suppressing cancer by targeting oncogenes and enhancing immune cells, while also enabling the manipulation of animal cells for efficient, sustainable cultivated meat production by improving cell growth, reducing animal product use, and optimizing meat characteristics.
What do you see as the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Finding funding that will support research.
What does a typical day look like for you in your role?
A typical day would include planning, coordinating and managing assigned scientific projects. Evaluating data, preparing reports and presentations and submitting them to the client and also meeting with them.
What do you enjoy most about working at StageBio?
Engaging in varied projects from different clients provides new challenges that keep me engaged and motivated.
Can you share a memorable project or achievement you’re particularly proud of?
One of my most memorable projects was contributing to the research on the optimal conditions for cultivating cells in the lab during my previous job. It was a rewarding experience, knowing the importance of that work. Now that I’ve just started at StageBio, I’m excited for the future and the memorable projects and achievements that lie ahead.
What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone looking to work in your field?
Science is much more about exploring the unknown and learning from failure. Each mistake or unexpected result is a chance to grow and discover something new.
Is there a mentor or colleague who has had a big impact on your career? How?
I think all my mentors and colleagues have a positive impact on my career, right from my teachers in school to the current place I work in.
What excites you about the future of your industry or your role at StageBio?
I’m thrilled to have started at StageBio and look forward to the exciting projects and accomplishments ahead. Working on a diverse range of projects for different clients offers new challenges that keep me motivated and engaged.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking, playing sports, and relaxing at the spa.
Sharon, we are so happy you are on our team and look forward to the impact you will have on advancing research and helping the community! Thanks for all you do.
